Thrive at HAKI
While we are proud to cultivate a community of people to come together and have the opportunity to speak in their native language, we are also big advocates for the importance of learning English.
We offer regular classes and provide several resocurces for community members to get connect with ESL. Many immigrants might not have had the opprtunity to learn English before, and we understand this can make a big difference for how one can best adapt to a new culture.
Hearing from Parents About Their Child Care Needs
In January 2020, a listening session with parents and caregivers was held at the HAKI. This listening session was part of a series of family listening sessions funded by the Preschool Development Grant as a part of a statewide early learning needs assessment. The listening session was co-designed, organized, and hosted by HAKI and AB Cultural Drivers, OSLC Developments, Inc., and Portland State University. The goal of the sessions was to include the perspectives of African immigrant and refugee families, to understand their early learning needs and experiences, and to ultimately inform the development of the state’s early learning plan.

Developing the Skills for Success
We take care in providing opportunities for our community’s youth for activities that help with crime and gang prevention. Many inner-city youth are susceptible to getting involved in gangs and criminal activity from an early age if they don’t hav access to extracurricular activities or sports.
We partner with Street Soccer USA to create a curriculum for our young community members to connect with a culture of teamwork and respect through a series of soccer events.
